SUMMARY:Energy and Resource Recovery from Waste: Exploring Climate\, Carbon\, and Business Cases
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nWaste to Watts Series – Part 2\nEnergy and Resource Recovery from Waste: Exploring Climate\, Carbon\, and Business Cases \nIn British Columbia\, “waste as a resource” refers to strategies for transforming waste streams into valuable resources\, reducing landfill waste\, and mitigating environmental impacts. This involves reducing waste generation\, reusing materials\, recycling\, recovering energy\, nutrients\, and deriving other benefits from waste. \nOn this 90-minute session we continue to explore other applications and innovations\, and dive into the business case for carbon capture\, value-creation\, and climate action. \nOnce again\, we will also expand our solid waste focus and include discussion on the confluence of liquid waste\, solid waste\, and climate action. Look forward to learning more from: \n\nEcostrat | Aryn Garswood \nBiomass feedstock\, from tree nut shells and wood fibers\, for bioenergy\, biofuel\, and biochemical projects.\nBiocarbon Expert\, PhD | Geoff de Ruiter\nBioenergy\, carbon management\, and biocoal applications in British Columbia.\nWhirlpool-InSinkErator | Kendall Christiansen\nTechnology that supports energy sustainability by enabling the capture of bioenergy from food waste and sludge.=\nCapital Regional District | Rory Tooke\nBiosolids explorations and innovations.\n\nVignette: Highlights on how bioenergy and biocarbon technologies support the province’s CleanBC climate plan\, contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions by providing low-carbon fuel alternatives and enhancing forest carbon storage.\n \n\n– COST –\n$23 CWMA Members | $28 Non-Members \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: HHW Roundtable on 1lb+ Propane Tanks and 5kg+ lithium-ion batteries
DESCRIPTION:– EVENT DETAILS –\nWe’re witnessing infrastructure gaps in our household hazardous waste (HHW) systems\, particularly with items that are technically hazardous but have become ubiquitous consumer products. \n1-lb Propane Tanks: A Perfect Storm\nThese small canisters present a complex challenge—they’re pressurized vessels with explosion potential containing flammable gas\, yet marketed as “disposable” consumer products. Many HHW facilities and municipal waste operations struggle with proper handling protocols\, and finding a fully compliant processing organization has proven difficult for many regions. \n5\, 10\, 20-lb Propane Tanks\nAlso challenging. \nLarge Lithium-Ion Batteries: The 5kg+ Challenge\nThis weight threshold captures e-bike batteries\, power tool batteries\, and more. The 5kg limit reflects the critical point where specialized transportation and handling protocols become mandatory under current regulations and these batteries are not covered under the current EPR system. \nAre you experiencing specific collection logistics challenges in your area? Have you identified policy solutions or innovative approaches for these waste streams? Let’s get together to discuss and share! \nCWMA Roundtables serve as our collaborative platform to share our scenarios\, challenges\, and success stories. \nPlan to attend! \n\n– COST –\nNo Cost. This event is generously subsidized with thanks to the City of Vancouver. \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 9:50 AM for visiting and a/v check\n\n10:00 AM — Welcome Everyone / Acknowledgments \n10:10 AM — Roundtable / We anticipate a good-sized crowd and want to ensure we hear from all who want to contribute. As we hope to take a full inventory of what is going on\, we want to ensure we give enough time. Every CWMA roundtable is expertly facilitated with attendees expected to share about 2-3 minutes (ish).\n11:25 AM — More meetings/What is next?\n11:30 AM — Farewell! \n\n– VIRTUAL NOTES –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events. SUMMARY:The Power of Micro Recycling: A Showcase of Community Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nThe Power of Micro Recycling: A Showcase of Community Empowerment  \nMicro recycling is the process of breaking down and reprocessing materials at a small-to-medium scale – typically at the community\, household\, and small business level\, rather than through large industrial facilities and often with a focus on specific waste types (like plastic) that are not simple to recycle. \nIn BC\, it is proving to be a game-changer\, not only in diverting waste from landfills but also in fostering community engagement and promoting environmental stewardship. We are seeing more makers and innovative enterprises harness cutting-edge technologies alongside grassroots enthusiasm to process\, sort\, and transform recyclable materials right where waste originates—bringing solutions directly to communities. \nThis showcase of initiatives are creating sustainable alternatives that empower communities to take control of their environmental impact. Learn how these organizations are reshaping our relationship with waste—one community at a time. \nDelve Recycled\nPhoenix Plastics\nGood World Materials\nAlberni Makerspace\nOcean Legacy / Legacy Plastic\nWith vignettes by ReLove Local and Salt Legacy \n\n– COST –\n$15 CWMA Members | $20 Non-Members \n+GST.  This event is partially-subsidized thanks to our generous sponsor! \nCWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. Learn how to use your data to understand and give quantitative value to your work. \nEvent 1: Harnessing Data to Demonstrate the Return on Investment | JUNE 5 | Virtual | 1:00 – 2:30 PM\nEvent 2: Data Collection Processes & Practical Tools | AUGUST 5 | Virtual | 1:00 – 2:30 PM\nEvent 3: Driving Business Value with Microsoft 365 Copilot for Non-Profits + AI Open Learning | OCTOBER 8 | In Person \n\n– EVENT DETAILS –\nHarnessing Data to Demonstrate the Social Return on Investment | June 5\, 2025 | 1:00-2:30 PM \nSocial Return on Investment (SROI) focuses on identifying and measuring the social\, environmental\, and economic outcomes of a project or activity.  It aims to quantify the societal benefits\, such as improvements in well-being\, environmental protection\, or reduced inequality\, by assigning a monetary value to them. \nThe purpose of this (1.5-hour) intro session is to engage non-profits\, and organizations that embrace social return on investment\, in learning and discussion about reporting on the value being realized – be it social\, economic\, and environmental – in ways that are understood by those who could make investments in your organizations. \nSROI analysis allows social service organizations\, and those who fund them\, to legitimize their actions by assigning a monetary value to their contribution\, thus allowing them to “speak the language of the traditional business community”. \nHaving a method to express the value of your work in a concise and standardized way come with many benefits. \n\n– COST –\n$15 CWMA Members | $20 Non-Members \n+GST.  This event is partially-subsidized. CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. We are grateful for your attendance. SUMMARY:A Primer on Renewable and Recoverable Energy from Waste in British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:CWMA Presentations and Panel Discussion | Virtual Panel Event\nApril 17\, 2025 | 10:00 – 11:30 AM\n\n– DETAILS –\nWaste to Watts Series – Part 1\nA Primer on Renewable & Recoverable Energy from Waste in British Columbia\nThis 90-minute event will help us all learn the fundamentals of the technology\, economics\, and environmental pros and cons of methods currently being used in British Columbia to generate or recover renewable energy from waste. \nWe will include an inventory of facilities and then break down the basics of each method with presentations from experts in their specific methods. \n\nFortis on Landfill Gas Recovery basics and the programs across our province.\nVeolia on Waste-to-Energy with highlights of the Metro Vancouver facility.\nConvertus Group on the Surrey Biofuel Facility that converts organic waste into renewable natural gas and high-quality compost.\nThe University of Northern British Columbia will help us learn the basics of biomass gasification systems while highlighting their system which will be enhanced with a vignette by Nexterra who completed the energy-from-renewable-waste combined heat and power system located at UBC’s Vancouver campus.\nFinally\, False Creek Neighbourhood Energy Utility will dip us out of solid waste to learn more about wastewater energy recovery.\n\nTime will be given for some discussion and questions. \n\nWe will end with a vignette to introduce  our second Waste to Watts event planned for September. Kendall Christiansen of Whirlpool/InSinkErator will illustrate some of the cases that can help us all understand and be ready to discuss the confluence of liquid waste\, solid waste and climate action.\n\nThis is a great opportunity to learn the basics of an area that is complex and at times\, dare we say\, confusing\, which has inspired this event as the first in our “Waste to Watts” series to explore waste’s role in energy. \nNOTE: We are also tiptoeing carefully into (non-solid waste) areas… Traditional waste management has often treated liquid waste\, solid waste\, and greenhouse gas emissions as separate environmental challenges. We have noted more integrated ideas have been growing and there is potentially interconnected opportunities. We want to be on top of these conversations to keep our community at the forefront of knowledge and innovation. \n\n– COST –\n$23 CWMA Members | $28 Non-Members \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership.
