SUMMARY:Emergency and Disaster Debris Planning: Shared Realities Across Different Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nThis workshop-style event is the clever follow-up to our well-attended roundtable in late 2025. \nCommunities across North America are facing a rapidly evolving landscape of climate‑driven emergencies. Whether the challenge is keeping solid waste facilities operational during a crisis or managing massive debris flows after a major event\, the underlying reality is the same: preparedness determines resilience. \nWe will bring together three complementary perspectives: one grounded in the operational realities of a mid-sized BC region\, one shaped by large-scale debris management in a major metropolitan area\, and one forged in the particular challenges of dispersed communities and coastal contexts. \nTogether\, they offer something rare: planning insights that travel across geography\, scale\, and context. \n\nPart 1: Comox Valley — Disaster Preparedness for Solid Waste Facilities & Waste Diversion \nThe Comox Valley offers a uniquely practical lens on disaster readiness. Their landscape – a mix of rural and urban communities\, limited transportation corridors\, and a regional solid waste system that must remain functional even under stress – mirrors the realities of many BC regions. We will explore: \n\nHow the Comox Valley developed a disaster preparedness plan tailored to solid waste facilities\nWhat effective disaster waste diversion looks like when disposal capacity is limited\nHow operational continuity is maintained when staff\, infrastructure\, and access routes are disrupted\nWhat happened when the plan was tested in a real emergency\, and how lessons learned shaped improvements\n\nThe Comox Valley experience highlights a shared truth for small and mid‑sized regions: even with constrained resources\, proactive planning can transform vulnerability into resilience. \n\nPart 2: Metro Oregon & Cape Breton Regional Municipality — Disaster Debris Management in Diverse Contexts \nComplementing the Comox Valley’s facility‑focused approach\, Metro Oregon and Cape Breton Regional Municipality highlight the broader challenges posed by variable landscapes in disaster debris management. Despite their very different landscapes\, both jurisdictions navigate similar pressures: \n\nDebris volumes that exceed normal system capacity\nThe need for pre‑identified sites\, contracts\, and operational workflows\nEnvironmental and public health risks tied to unmanaged debris\nIntense pressure to restore community function quickly and cost-effectively\n\nMetro Oregon’s planning reflects the complexity of multi‑jurisdictional coordination in a large urban region. Cape Breton’s approach reflects the realities of widespread storm impacts and the need for rapid mobilization across dispersed coastal communities. \n\n– COST–\n$23 CWMA Members | $28 Non Members  \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events\, dedicated patronage from regular sponsors\, and our membership. We are grateful for your attendance. Differential pricing is available for students and non-profits — please be in touch. | Am I a member? \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 9:50 AM for visiting and a/v check\n10:00 AM — Welcome Everyone\n10:09 AM — Presentations\n11:10 AM — Q&A + Open discussion\n11:28 AM — Farewell and what’s next \n\n– VIRTUAL NOTES –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events. SUMMARY:Resource Revolution: Models to Turn Local Waste into Community Prosperity
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nMoving from aspiration to hands-on action\, this event will bring practical ideas on how communities can create new circular businesses\, jobs and social enterprises. Let’s move the conversation from “managing a problem” (waste) to “creating a future” (prosperity). \nJoin us to learn about three distinct but complementary approaches to community-level circularity – repair/reuse social enterprises\, material recovery operations\, and full system transformation.  Learn more about mattress recycling social enterprises\, footwear repair businesses\, and how to create a full circular system\, in addition to other examples that you can start working on tomorrow! \nCircularity does not need to be complicated\, just collaborative. You will learn from: \nPACE Penticton | Helping communities and social organizations successfully start and run a mattress recycling program that provides a simple\, low-tech solution to mattress recycling. \nAwl Together Leather | Learn why rural shoe and gear repair matters and how to get started. This underserved niche is a perfect fit for a rural focus and fills the gap with a community-focused circular business. \nTown of Banff | Building circularity in a tourism-dependent community: tackling food waste\, single-use items\, and creating circular systems in a unique mountain town context where visitor impacts amplify waste challenges. \nSynergy Foundation | The economic and entrepreneurial side of circularity and how to inspire it locally tomorrow. Our own green business and circular economy experts will help us round out the bigger picture of economic development meets action and entrepreneurism. \nVignettes \nVerbal highlights from other great organizations\, including: \nBetter Buckets | An injection molding and recycling company founded by a local entrepreneur in Chilliwack\, BC\, in 2019\, with the belief that efficiency and sustainability can align with sound economics\, the founder has made it his mission to build a circular system\, making quality plastic products more sustainably and cost-effectively with a local focus. \nEZ Blocks | A Canadian-made modular building system designed to simplify construction—no tools\, glue\, or waste required. The blocks are crafted from reclaimed wood\, free from VOCs and harmful chemicals\, making them a safer\, eco-conscious choice for indoor and outdoor builds and are 100% reusable and recyclable. \n7 Leagues Leather  | A woman-owned tannery and wholesale fish leather manufacturer combining circular economy production with a commitment to positive environmental and social impact and the highest quality of craft. Our bio-based leather processing uses plant compounds and rescued fish skins that would otherwise be discarded. \n\n– COST–\nAnother popular BOGO event!\nBYO Economic Development colleague\, a local entrepreneur\, or a social organization leader to learn along with you. \n2 people for the price of 1:  $23 CWMA Members | $28 Non Members  \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. We are grateful for your attendance. SUMMARY:Dreaming of Solutions for Mattress Recycling in British Columbia
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nWe need to spring into action! Join us for a critical conversation about the future of mattress recycling in British Columbia. This collaborative session brings together regional districts\, recyclers\, social enterprises\, and industry experts to chart a path forward. \nMattresses present a significant challenge for BC’s waste management systems. Bulky\, expensive to haul\, challenging to process\, and often ending up in landfills\, they represent both an environmental concern and an opportunity for innovation. \nAs we all navigate the postponement of an Extended Producer Responsibility system for mattresses in BC\, now is the time to explore practical solutions that could work for communities across the province. \nWhat We’ll Cover\n\nUnderstanding the BC Context: We’ll begin with an overview of the current situation in BC\nHighlights of Operational & Funding Models: Explore the spectrum of approaches—from EPR-driven programs to non-EPR alternatives—understanding what works\, what doesn’t\, and what’s possible in different contexts.\nInnovation in Action: Hear from organizations demonstrating practical\, scalable solutions right here in BC\, with a focus on social impact and inclusive employment models.\nLearning from Established Programs: Discover insights from successful mattress recycling programs in BC\, Oregon\, California\, and Connecticut\, plus a special look at the Netherlands’ RetourMatras EPR system.\nThe Reality Check: Through a collaborative data call\, we’ll aggregate mattress volumes being managed across BC to paint an accurate picture of the challenge we’re collectively addressing.\nIdentify Gaps and Opportunities: Let’s collaborate while we wait for broader EPR implementation.\n\nFeatured Speakers & Perspectives\n\nThompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD): Frontline insights on how mattresses impact local waste management systems\nRecycle Matters (INEO) + Penticton and Area Cooperative Enterprises (PACE): Social enterprise approaches to mattress recycling with inclusive employment at the core\nMattress Recycling: On-the-ground perspectives from commercial recycling operations and the largest mattress recycler in Western Canada.\nMattress Recycling Council (US): Lessons from established state EPR programs in Oregon\, California\, and Connecticut\n\n Vignette: Mattress Recycling in the EU / RetourMatras \n\n– COST –\n$23 CWMA Members | $28 Non-Members \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. We are grateful for your attendance. Differential pricing is available for students and non-profits; please be in touch. | Am I a member? \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 9:50 AM for visiting and a/v check\n10:00 AM — Welcome Everyone / Acknowledgments\n10:05 AM — Presentations / Vignettes\n11:05 AM — Discussion Q&A\n11:29 AM — Farewell! \n\n– VIRTUAL NOTES –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events. SUMMARY:CWMA Emergency and Disaster Debris Management Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:– EVENT DETAILS –\nWe will begin this important discussion on disaster debris management with a roundtable to kick-start the collaboration and knowledge-building we need to move toward coordinated solutions. This event is intended to inspire forward action. \n\n\n\nDebris Management is a critical component of emergency and disaster preparedness. It represents one of the most significant yet often under-appreciated challenges facing British Columbia’s emergency response and recovery systems. \nAs the province continues to experience increasingly frequent and severe natural disasters—including wildfires\, flooding\, landslides\, and atmospheric rivers—the need for comprehensive\, coordinated debris management strategies has never been more important. \n\nCWMA Roundtables serve as our collaborative platform to share our scenarios\, challenges\, and come together to figure out a path forward for best practices. Plan to attend!\n\n\n\n– COST –\nNo Cost. This event is generously subsidized with thanks to the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Cowichan Valley Regional District. \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 12:50 PM for visiting and a/v check\n\n1:00 PM — Welcome Everyone / Acknowledgments \n1:10 PM — Roundtable / We anticipate a good-sized crowd and want to ensure we hear from all who want to contribute. SUMMARY:30th Anniversary Celebration Reception
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nCelebrating 30 Years of Coast Waste Management Association! \nAs the Coast Waste Management Association (CWMA) approaches its 30th Anniversary\, we reflect with immense gratitude on the foundational vision and unwavering dedication that have shaped our journey. \nIt was in December 1995 that CWMA was formally established\, born from a collaborative spirit among regional districts on Vancouver Island and coastal communities. The goal was clear: to unite\, discuss\, and inspire innovative solutions for solid waste management\, particularly addressing the unique challenges of our coastal regions. \nOver the past three decades\, thanks to the leadership and commitment  of our board members\, staff\, members\, and friends of CWMA\, we have blossomed from a vital local initiative into a respected province-wide movement with our roots still firmly in our coastal beginnings. \nAs a community\, we have all worked together to create a legacy of solutions and a future of possibilities and eagerly anticipating celebrating with everyone! \nFurther details regarding the whole 2025 CWMA Conference can be found on our Conference Website. \n\n– COST –\n$30 +GST \nNOTE: This reception event is already included for delegates attending the full in-person conference and the Wednesday-only in-person option. SUMMARY:A Toy Story: Lessons in Finding Joy in Reuse and Repair / Single Event Registration
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Bonus Event as part of 2025 Conference!\nNote: We are cleverly using 1995 movies as thematic elements to add nostalgia and personality to our sessions.  \n1995 Movie Panel Theme: A Toy Story\nThe entire premise revolves around toys finding new purpose and meaning as they’re passed between children. Woody and Buzz don’t become worthless when Andy outgrows them – they discover renewed joy with Bonnie. This mirrors how we can extend the life of objects by reusing or finding new uses for them. Let’s learn from those who are redefining our relationship with objects to be based on care\, creativity\, and community rather than constant replacement. \n\n– SPEAKERS – \nJason Hawkins\, Reusables.com\nRosemary Cooper\, Share Reuse Repair\nKevin Pennock\, KORE Outdoors\nChris Diplock\, Thingery\nWith Moderator\, Tamara Shulman \, Tamara Shulman & Associates \n\n– COST –\n$30 | CWMA Members & Friends \n+GST.  We grateful for your attendance. SUMMARY:Energy and Resource Recovery from Waste: Exploring Climate\, Carbon\, and Business Cases
DESCRIPTION:– DETAILS –\nWaste to Watts Series – Part 2\nEnergy and Resource Recovery from Waste: Exploring Climate\, Carbon\, and Business Cases \nIn British Columbia\, “waste as a resource” refers to strategies for transforming waste streams into valuable resources\, reducing landfill waste\, and mitigating environmental impacts. This involves reducing waste generation\, reusing materials\, recycling\, recovering energy\, nutrients\, and deriving other benefits from waste. \nOn this 90-minute session we continue to explore other applications and innovations\, and dive into the business case for carbon capture\, value-creation\, and climate action. \nOnce again\, we will also expand our solid waste focus and include discussion on the confluence of liquid waste\, solid waste\, and climate action. Look forward to learning more from: \n\nEcostrat | Aryn Garswood \nBiomass feedstock\, from tree nut shells and wood fibers\, for bioenergy\, biofuel\, and biochemical projects.\nBiocarbon Expert\, PhD | Geoff de Ruiter\nBioenergy\, carbon management\, and biocoal applications in British Columbia.\nWhirlpool-InSinkErator | Kendall Christiansen\nTechnology that supports energy sustainability by enabling the capture of bioenergy from food waste and sludge.=\nCapital Regional District | Rory Tooke\nBiosolids explorations and innovations.\n\nVignette: Highlights on how bioenergy and biocarbon technologies support the province’s CleanBC climate plan\, contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions by providing low-carbon fuel alternatives and enhancing forest carbon storage.\n \n\n– COST –\n$23 CWMA Members | $28 Non-Members \n+GST.  CWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. SUMMARY:Mind the Gap: HHW Roundtable on 1lb+ Propane Tanks and 5kg+ lithium-ion batteries
DESCRIPTION:– EVENT DETAILS –\nWe’re witnessing infrastructure gaps in our household hazardous waste (HHW) systems\, particularly with items that are technically hazardous but have become ubiquitous consumer products. \n1-lb Propane Tanks: A Perfect Storm\nThese small canisters present a complex challenge—they’re pressurized vessels with explosion potential containing flammable gas\, yet marketed as “disposable” consumer products. Many HHW facilities and municipal waste operations struggle with proper handling protocols\, and finding a fully compliant processing organization has proven difficult for many regions. \n5\, 10\, 20-lb Propane Tanks\nAlso challenging. \nLarge Lithium-Ion Batteries: The 5kg+ Challenge\nThis weight threshold captures e-bike batteries\, power tool batteries\, and more. The 5kg limit reflects the critical point where specialized transportation and handling protocols become mandatory under current regulations and these batteries are not covered under the current EPR system. \nAre you experiencing specific collection logistics challenges in your area? Have you identified policy solutions or innovative approaches for these waste streams? Let’s get together to discuss and share! \nCWMA Roundtables serve as our collaborative platform to share our scenarios\, challenges\, and success stories. \nPlan to attend! \n\n– COST –\nNo Cost. This event is generously subsidized with thanks to the City of Vancouver. \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 9:50 AM for visiting and a/v check\n\n10:00 AM — Welcome Everyone / Acknowledgments \n10:10 AM — Roundtable / We anticipate a good-sized crowd and want to ensure we hear from all who want to contribute. As we hope to take a full inventory of what is going on\, we want to ensure we give enough time. Every CWMA roundtable is expertly facilitated with attendees expected to share about 2-3 minutes (ish).\n11:25 AM — More meetings/What is next?\n11:30 AM — Farewell! \n\n– VIRTUAL NOTES –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events.
