SUMMARY:Combustible Dust: What You Need to Know About Upcoming OHS Regulatory Changes
DESCRIPTION:PHOTO: Abbotsford firefighters were battling a blaze behind the Woodworks Furniture Factory when a cloud of sawdust ignited\, engulfing three firefighters in a fireball – Sep 12\, 2016 | Credit: Global News \n– DETAILS –\nAmendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation relating to combustible dusts will take effect January 4\, 2027. To help you prepare for and implement these new requirements\, CWMA is working with WorkSafeBC to ensure our solid waste and resource recovery sector has accurate and consistent information. \nCombustible dust is any fine material that can ignite when exposed to an ignition source and explode when dispersed in the air. Common combustible dust hazards can arise from carbon-based materials such as wood\, paper\, cardboard\, grain\, plastics\, and rubber\, as well as certain metal dusts including aluminum\, magnesium\, and zinc. \nThese materials move through nearly every part of the waste and resource recovery system. \nAny operation that collects\, handles\, processes\, or stores them may face significant fire and explosion risks if combustible dust hazards are not properly identified and controlled — including transfer stations\, material recovery and recycling facilities\, composting and organics processing sites\, wood waste and construction and demolition operations\, scrap metal and auto recycling yards\, EPR collection depots\, collection and hauling operations\, and landfills. \nUpcoming changes to WorkSafeBC’s combustible dust regulations will place broader responsibilities on employers to identify and assess hazards\, implement effective health and safety programs\, and train workers to manage combustible dust risks in the workplace. \nJoin this webinar to learn what these regulatory changes mean for the solid waste and resource recovery sector\, and how to prepare for compliance. \nMORE INFORMATION: https://www.worksafebc.com/en/health-safety/hazards-exposures/combustible-dust \n\n– PROGRAM –\nParticipants will learn: \n\nWhat combustible dust is and how it can create fire and explosion hazards\nCommon combustible dust sources across waste\, recycling\, and organics operations — including shredding\, grinding\, screening\, sorting\, conveying\, baling\, and material storage\nKey changes to WorkSafeBC combustible dust regulations\nEmployer responsibilities for hazard assessment\, prevention\, and control\nSteps waste sector employers can take now to improve safety and prepare for compliance\n\n\n– AGENDA –\n\nCWMA Welcome: Introductions\, Acknowledgments\nWorkSafe BC Presentation with Kim Stubbs – Industry and Program Specialist and Mike Tasker – Supervisor\, Prevention Field Services\nFacilitated Question & Answer \n\nAs with all CWMA events\, this session will include a recap\, additional information\, and links. \n\n– NO COST –\nThese events are made possible by our members’ annual fees. \nIf you are not yet a member and would like to help us keep offering events like this\, please consider joining CWMA! \n\n– VIRTUAL EVENT –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events. SUMMARY:British Columbia Event Waste Reduction Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:BC Event Waste Reduction Roundtable\n\n– EVENT –\nEvery year\, BC’s fairs\, festivals\, races\, and community celebrations feed and entertain hundreds of thousands of people. Then they quietly deal with a mountain of cups\, plates\, food scraps\, bottles and whatever has been left behind. \nThe teams that run these events already do a lot of waste management\, often with volunteers\, tight budgets\, and a field that was a parking lot three days earlier. \nThis event will bring these people together. \nIt is our first step to create a peer network for the planners and operational leads behind BC’s larger public events\, where they can share what works\, what didn’t\, and what they’d do differently to divert and manage waste. \n***Who should attend*** \nEvent directors\, planners and coordinators\, site and operations managers\, vendor coordinators\, volunteer leads who run waste stations\, and sustainability or “green team” leads. Event-greening contractors and service providers who work across multiple events are welcome too. \n***Event types*** \nMusic and arts festivals\, food festivals\, cultural and heritage celebrations\, agricultural fairs and exhibitions\, Canada Day and community events\, marathons and large sporting events\, seasonal or night markets… \n***What we’ll do together*** \nUsing our tried-and-true Roundtable Updates format — where people give brief updates on the work they are doing so we can all learn about everything — from vendor packaging rules\, station design and signage\, volunteer training\, compost and recycling collection and hauling\, reusable cup and dishware systems to overall lessons learned from events that have been working to reduce their waste. \n***We are just getting started*** \nThis first gathering is where we’ll decide together what kind of forum or ongoing meetings will work best for everyone. We’ll hear short updates on what participants are already doing in this area. Coming just to listen is welcome too! \n\n– COST –\n$ Free for guests who are event directors\, planners and coordinators\, site and operations managers\, vendor coordinators\, volunteer leads who run waste stations\, and sustainability or “green team” leads.\n$10 +GST for CWMA Members and Friends | Your registration helps us subsidize the above group at no cost. Thank you! \nCWMA’s operations are supported wholly by events like these\, dedicated patronage from sponsors\, and our membership. We are grateful for your attendance. Differential pricing is available for students and non-profits; please be in touch. | Am I a member? \n\n– AGENDA –\nVirtual Doors Open at 10:20 AM Pacific for visiting and a/v check \n10:00 – 10:35 AM | Welcome!\n10:35 – 10:45 AM | Vignette presentation to get the sharing flowing\n10:45 – 11:25 AM | Facilitated Roundtable. Some will come to share\, others to listen; both are warmly welcome.\n11:25 – 11:30 AM | Final thoughts and what comes next. \n\n\n\n– VIRTUAL NOTES –\nCWMA uses the Zoom Platform for events. SUMMARY:CWMA Member Book Club: Leave The Lights On
DESCRIPTION:Book Club Discussion\nLeave the Lights On with author Jiaying Zhao\n\nPsychologist Elizabeth Dunn and climate behaviour scientist Jiaying Zhao argue in their book\, Leave the Lights On: How Joyful Decisions Can Save Our Species\, that fighting climate change should feel rewarding instead of demanding constant self-sacrifice. \n\nFollowing the fantastic keynote and book giveaway at our 2026 Conference\, we are hosting an informal book club discussion for CWMA MEMBERS only who have read the book. And we’re delighted that Jiaying Zhao has agreed to join us! \nThis is a relaxed conversation\, not a presentation. It will not be broadcast or recorded\, and seats are limited so everyone gets a chance to talk. \nCome ready to share what stuck with you\, what you’d challenge\, and what you might try in your own work.
