Highlights from Bruce’s tenure at Save On Foods include the Perishable Food Diversion Program and teaching a couple Grade 5 classes about food waste. The Perishable Food Diversion Program started in Feb 2018 and while there were a couple people that were sceptical about the program, it is now part of the culture of the organization and diverting approximately 1.4M KGs per month. Witnessing the impact on the food banks and family farms participating in this program was very impactful, especially coming through COVID. The presentations to the Grade 5 classes were very hands on for the students as they were able to see what damaged fruits looks and feels like and to know that there is still lots of value in these products. It was amazing that all the students knew that a brown or black banana should not destined for compost/landfill as it is the key ingredient in banana bread. Bruce will carry on his passion for sustainability through 4Ward Consulting.
